"The work of conservation is inspired by wonder, gratitude, reason, and love..... love for wild and settled places, for animals and plants, for people living now and those yet to come, for the creations of human hands and minds."

Plain Soap, Please!

Antibacterial additives in soaps-----and many other products, from toothpaste to trash bags-----such as triclosan and triclocarban are accumulating in our water supply, septic systems and in our bodies.  The Centers for Disease Control, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the American Medical Association all discourage the use of antibacterial products in the home and note that for hand-washing, scrubbing all the surfaces of your hands with plain soap and water will protect you from harmful bacteria.  (And viruses, your main foes during cold and flu season.)  Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (without antimicrobials---read the label) is fine in a pinch, but washing is better and keeps plastic bottles out of the waste stream.  To be on the safe side, read ingredient lists on every single product you buy, and avoid anything that says "antibacterial," "antimicrobial," or "contains Microban."
